Naila Azhar

Naila Azhar is a Boston-based psychiatrist trained both in psychotherapy and medication management. Through her clinical practice, she offers a welcoming, empathic, and warm space so that patients feel confident, safe, and enthusiastic about sharing their thoughts, emotions, challenges, and goals.
She hopes to better understand each patients inner world and how it affects his/her/their behaviors, social environment, and relationships. She helps her patients gain heightened self-awareness for making deep-seated and meaningful changes to his/her/their personality and emotional development.
Understanding each patient’s unique neuro-biology, psychology, immune system functioning, hormonal levels, nutrition, and metabolism will be an integral part of prescribing medications for each patient. She relies on pharmacologically intelligent and safe use of drugs for reducing one’s distress and improving the quality of one’s life. In addition, she uses psychotherapy and behavioral modification interventions to promote psychiatric health and well-being.
A little bit about her background: She was born in South Asia. After medical school, she completed residency training at the University of CT and studied health education at Emory University. Her experience of different cultures, travel around the world, education, and training in psychiatry have taught her the wisdom and patience to understand and respect the diverse human condition and its effects on the human mind and their lives. Her affiliation with academic centers In Boston and North Shore keeps her updated on innovative therapeutic approaches.
Dr. Azhar has extensive experience in treating patients with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and alcohol use disorder. She has safely administered Ketamine, anxiolytic medications, and stimulants, and performed. Areas of focus include depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, personality, stress and trauma-related disorders, psychosis, focus and compulsive disorders, relationship strain, life transitions, career stresses, gender dysphoria, gender transitions myriad other challenges.
